MEPs Request Fresh Engagement on the Euopean Soil Framework Directive - 06/01/2010

Jan 2010

Following a news post in June 2009 titled 'European Opposition Digs In to Block Soil Protection Directive' there have been some recent developments with MEPs trying to revive UK support and engagement.

The MEPs, all of whom are newly appointed shadow rapporteurs, have written to Gordon Brown to urge the ending of UK opposition to the Directive and instead begin fresh involvement with the discussions.

Opposition from the UK has seen criticism levied at the draft soil contamination proposals which include identification of contaminated sites and a registry of them.  However the MEPs believe that delaying legislative action to protect soils will only lead to even higher costs further down the road.

In their defense, DEFRA stated that the UK has always engaged constructively during the negotiations on the directive and would continue to do so in order to help safeguard this essential natural resource.
