Irish Government Publishes New Environmental Codes of Practice - 27/07/2009

Jul 2009

The Irish Government has published new codes of practice for unauthorised waste activities and contaminated land enforcement.

The development and publication of these codes of practices comes following Ireland's environmental regulators analysing and observing how their oversees peers are enforcing environmental law.

With these now in place the Environmental Protection Agency have called on authorities to get more 'robust' with their actions, as the policies set out information on the detection of offences, policies on clean-up and remediation, and provides the powers for penalties and sanctions.

According to EDIE the code represents a significant part of Ireland's response to a European Court of Justice judgement, as well as providing the means of strengthening the existing enforcement system.
